Duties and Services The Bureau County Highway Department is responsible for implementing a cost-effective program of engineering, construction, and maintenance of 220 miles of county highways and 55 bridges. The Highway Department coordinates with other agencies such as The Illinois Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration to provide an efficient and safe movement of people and goods throughout the county. In addition, the Highway Department provides technical assistance to all 25 townships of Bureau County and is lead agency in Motor Fuel funded maintenance and projects. The Highway Department is responsible for administrating Township Motor Fuel Tax and Township Bridge Funds in addition to designing and construction of petitioned culvert and bridge projects.
